Adam Yauch, one third of legendary hip-hop group the Beastie Boys has passed away at the age of 47. Better known by his stage name MCA, Yauch had been receiving treatment for cancer since 2009 after doctors. discovered a tumor located in his salivary gland.
Yauch co-founded the Beastie Boys with Mike "Mike D" Diamond and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horowitz in 1979. Back in April the Beastie Boys were admitted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but because of his treatment Yauch was unable to attend.
Outside of his music career with the Beastie Boys, Yauch was actually heavily involved in the movement to free Tibet and he even co-organized the Tibetan Freedom Concerts of the late Nineties. A little-known fact about Yauch is that the singer directed many of the Beastie Boys’ music videos under the pseudonym Nathaniel Horblower.
So sad to see him go so young. I grew up with and always loved their music. It feels like a part of my youth has died so I think I’ll spend the rest of the day listening to some Beastie Boys music as sort of a tribute to MCA’s musical contributions to the world.
