Did you hear it? The ovaries of Fangirls everywhere just exploded in unison when word came out today that Marvel cast Benedict Cumberbatch to play Doctor Strange in its upcoming superhero film. This deal happened rather quickly after Joaquin Phoenix walked away from the deal, and Marvel was unable to come to terms with Jared Leto or Tom Hardy.
Scott Derrickson is directing Doctor Strange and Jon Spaihts is composing the script for the film (the first draft was penned by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer). Doctor Strange was dreamt up by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko during that Marvel Comics most popular days in the early 1960s. He is a brain surgeon who becomes Sorcerer Supreme, protecting planet Earth against magical and mystical threats with powers of sorcery, mysticism, and martial arts.
