Country music legend Merle Haggard passes away on his birthday

Legendary country music performer Merle Haggard died at age 79 today which also happens to be his birthday. His cause of death was reportedly pneumonia.

Haggard was best known for hits such “Okie From Muskogee” and “Sing Me Back Home”. Along with Buck Owens Haggard helped create what is known as the Bakersfield sound in the 1950s. Haggard had 40 number one hits between 1966 and 1987. He was inducted into the country music Hall of Fame in 1994.

Haggard is survived by his wife and six children. Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
