Ruth Musick “Mama Ruth” Jackson who was the mother of country music icon Alan Jackson has passed away today peacefully at her home in Newnan, Georgia at the age of 86. “Mama Ruth” served as some of the inspiration behind the country music stars popular songs.
“My mama raised five children – four girls, and there was me.
She found her strength in faith in God and a love of family.
She never had a social life; home was all she knew
Except the time she took a job to pay a bill or two.”
(Lyrics from “Home,” by Alan Jackson)
It’s been a little bit more than 20 years since that song was first performed and those words still describe Mama Ruth as perfectly as they did during the time on earth she had shared with us. Alan Jackson’s frequent references to his mom and her occasional appearance with him made her a beloved figure to many of Jackson’s fans. It was a role that Mama Ruth really embraced, frequently greeting those who sought out Alan Jackson’s childhood home, inviting them inside to take a photo of the front porch are even offering them a nice cold glass of iced tea as she would any guest to her home.
Mama Ruth is survived by her five children – daughters Diane, Cathy, Carol, Connie and son Alan as well as by 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Her beloved husband Eugene passed away 17 years ago, in January of 2000.
Our condolences to the entire Jackson family. Mama Ruth will surely be missed.
