Whenever you think of comic book-to-TV adaptations, Archie probably isn’t the very first thing that pops into your head. But that Is not stopping the CW network, which has just ordered to pilot a live-action television show based on the American comic book classic. It is called Riverdale, after the made-up town in which Archie takes place.
The show is said to offer ” an unexpected and subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends,” the pitch reads, adding that it will explore “the surrealism of small town life — the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome façade.” Archie’s official internet site states that the show will, perhaps unsurprisingly, center on the “eternal love triangle of Archie Andrews, girl-next-door Betty Cooper, and rich socialite Veronica Lodge.”
Archie has been around since 1941 though in 2014 the titular hero went out in a blaze of glory and took a bullet for his best friend, Kevin Keller. Only a few details are currently available about the show, including any information about casting or how closely it will adhere the source material, but it’s being executive produced by Greg Berlanti, according to Variety, who’s already in charge of CW’s other comic book shows, Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow.
