Former Olympic gold medalist Jean Vuarnet dead at the age of 83

Former French Olympic gold medal winning downhill skier Jean Vuarnet passed away today at the age of 83.

Besides being known for his Olympic accomplishments Vuarnet lent his name to an exclusive brand of sunglasses that many people love.

Vuarnet was the very first Olympic champion to wear metal skis and is also credited with creating the “egg” position that allows skiers to have a better aerodynamic profile. In addition n the 1960s Vuarnet helped develop the Avoriaz ski resort, opened in 1964 as part of the famed “Portes du Soleil” ski area that links 12 French and Swiss resorts.

Vuarnet suffered a personal tragedy in 1995 when his wife and son were involved in ritual killings along with dozens of members of the Order of the Solar Temple cult.

No funeral arrangements or cause of death have been released to the public as of yet.
