Great news for fans of HBO’s Game of Thrones the series has been renewed for a third season. This third season will be called A Storm of Swords and it means at least part of George R.R. Martin’s third book in the “Song of Ice and Fire” series will get a television adaptation.
The news of the renewal comes following the record-breaking season two premiere in which a total of 3.9 million viewers watched the very first broadcast and 6.3 million more viewers watched later that evening. The ratings represented a 53% gain in the shows average from season one and a 27% raise from the previous high reached in last season’s finale.
HBO released the following statement:
“Series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weissraised our expectations for the second season — and then surpassed them,” said HBO programming president Michael Lombardo. “We are thrilled by all the viewer and media support we’ve received for the series and can’t wait to see what Dan and David have in store for next season.”
The third season of Game of Thrones will likely only consist of 10 episodes however I like the previous two seasons it will not be following Martin’s book from start to finish because the people behind the show don’t believe that A Storm of Swords could be told in just 10 episodes.
Varying from the book could be risky because HBO’s contract states that they will only produce the series as long as Martin wanted them to allowing the writer to pull the plug on the series at any time. Hopefully, varying from the book pays off.
