In the Harry Potter films Jason Isaacs played Lucius Malfoy a really bad guy who always seemed to get caught and have his plans foiled and it turns out he had a lot in common with his character.
During an interview on Milling About at the Edinburgh Film Festival in Scotland, Jason talked about filming the Harry Potter movies:
“You’re not allowed to walk around the Harry Potter set with a video camera because everything is sacred,” he tells host Robin Milling.
“The very, very first day when they started filming the first [movie], they had this pile of gold coins on the set, and they broke for lunch and came back and almost all the gold coins had gone because people were taking them for memorabilia.”
“I complained after [film] four or five that I didn’t have my own wand. I invented and designed my cane, that had a wand in it. I’d try to steal it at the end of the film and they’d catch me,” Jason—whose new supernatural comedy, Skeletons, involves “two exorcists who literally remove the skeletons from the cupboards from people’s homes”—continues.
“Once I was walking around with a friend and I was trying to impress him with how these rules apply to other people and not me and there was a huge pile of newspapers that Miranda Richardson[‘s character, Rita Skeeter] writes for and I took it to my trailer.
“I was probably thinking of giving it back—I was just showing off for my friend—and within about three seconds there was a contingency banging at my door of my trailer ‘Can we have those newspapers back!’ and appropriately humiliated me in front of my friend!”
Jason Isaacs now stars in Awake on NBC as a police detective that can’t tell if he’s awake or asleep or which reality is actually real. Hopefully he’s more like this character (a good guy) and doesn’t try to steal anything else from a set.
