NBC’s freshman television show about the making of a Marilyn Monroe musical Smash scored a major coup when it convinced Uma Thurman to take on a reoccurring role of an at least five episode arc as if Hollywood movie star recruited to play Marilyn Monroe on Broadway.
Executive producers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman penned a song, "Dig Deep," specifically for the actress (who was pregnant during production), but Thurman had a little bit of a shock between the difference of making a movie and doing television. So both executive producers spent two days working nearly exclusively with the actress so that she could master the song and meet the expectations of Smash’s viewing audience.
