Smash Creator/Showrunner Steps Down

In a scene a lot like what You’d actually expect to take place on NBC’s Smash rather than in real life NBC has decided to change it’s behind the scenes star.

Just hours after it was announced that NBC has picked up Smash for a second season Showrunner/creator Theresa Rebeck will step down from day to day showrunning duties. She will however stay on board as a producer and may even help write some of next season’s episodes.

Even with Rebeck stepping down as showrunner for Season 2, Smash will continue have a deep roster of fellow executive producers with Broadway credibility, including Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman, Craig Zadan andNeil Meron, among others.

Look for season two of Smash to be a lot different with less focus on the showrunners and more on the actors. We’re also told NBC is looking to cut some costs for Smash due to disappointing ratings and the only reason it made it to season two is the obscene amount of money sunk into it’s launch.

Look for a few more changes to be announced in the next week or so but as always we’ll keep you posted.

Smash airs Monday’s after The Voice on NBC.
