Universal Pictures has decided to breathe new life into its dusty franchise and reboot The Mummy once again. This marks the fourth time that Universal has relaunched The Mummy franchise since it began in 1932 with Boris Karloff as the reanimated Pharaoh and most recently starred Brendan Fraser as the heroic mummy foe.
It seems rather soon for a relaunch after all The Mummy: Tomb of the Emperor was just released in 2008 and took in $400 million worldwide at the box office. Then again with the success of the Batman reboot who knows this may be a very financially beneficial move.
Universal brought and screenwriter John Spaihts of Prometheus fame to write the script and instructed him to focus more on the famed movie monsters horror roots. It sounds good to me in theory as long as they don’t get one of these “teen heartthrob” actors to star in it. I guess we’ll just have to see how it is once it’s released.
